Many people assume that most of the car accidents they see on the roads in Michigan are minor fender benders. Little do they realize that many of those accidents involve people who sustained severe and catastrophic injuries. As common as motor vehicle wrecks are, it is important for motorists to become familiar with the types of injuries they could sustain and how they can impact their lives.
Here is a brief overview on some of the injuries that car accident victims may incur.
Emotional trauma
Car crashes are very scary events. Many car accident victims suffer emotionally after being involved in them. Initially, they may feel shock, anger and fear. As time progresses from the date of the incidents, they may become depressed; anxious; withdrawn; stressed; and suffer from irritability, mood swings, insomnia and a loss of appetite.
Scrapes, bruises and broken bones
Some car accident victims sustain scrapes, bruises and broken bones. Those who end up with scrapes and bruises are often able to walk away from these events with no other serious injuries. However, some people who have serious bruising, lacerations and broken bones may need to undergo continuing medical treatment, therapies and long recoveries.
Brain injuries, paralysis and death
Not all people who end up in car crashes can walk away from them. Some victims sustain serious injuries to their heads and spinal cords from the impact and debris of car accidents. Some of them suffer from mild concussions to severe traumatic brain injuries which alter brain function and can cause victims to experience personality changes, short-to-long-term memory loss and other issues. Some victims are not fortunate enough to live past their car accidents. They may die on impact from the crash, or they may succumb from their injuries soon after.
Anyone who is in a car accident should seek out medical care to check for injuries. Even if they feel normal after their ordeal, they should know that not all injuries show up immediately upon impact or in the first few hours after an accident. Some brain injuries can take days and weeks to show up. To lower the risk of complications and death, medical intervention is necessary.
